The Revere High boys soccer team began its first GBL Cup tournament match on Tuesday against Everett.

The Patriots entered the contest as the top seed in the inaugural tournament, holding a perfect 7-0 record in the Greater Boston League. Their opponent, Everett, finished fourth in the regular season standings. The winner of this matchup will face the victor of the Chelsea versus Somerville game on Thursday. That final match will determine the first recipient of the GBL Cup. The losing teams will compete in a separate consolation contest.

Coach Gerardo Rodriguez’s squad currently holds a 12-1-1 overall record. The team improved its standing with a 3-2 victory over Somerville on Tuesday and a 3-1 win at Brockton on Friday. These results extended Revere’s unbeaten streak to 13 games. The streak began after a 3-2 loss to Central Catholic at the start of the season in early September.

The GBL Cup represents a structural change for the league this season. Athletic directors voted to reduce regular season play to a single meeting between all schools. They added this tournament for the top four teams, while the lower four teams compete in a separate bracket using the same preliminary and final format.

After the cup competition concludes, the Patriots will await their seeding for the MIAA Division 2 state tournament. Revere is currently ranked 14th in the division’s power ratings. This position guarantees the team a home game in the opening round of the state postseason.

Other Revere High teams also competed recently. The boys cross country team defeated Everett 29-26 on Wednesday. Kosta Stamotopoulos and Diogo Yogi finished first and second, with times of 17:22 and 17:26 respectively. The girls soccer team won 2-0 at Lowell on Friday, moving to 8-7-1. They need one point in their final two games to secure a .500 record for state tournament qualification. The girls volleyball team stands at 7-10 after three losses last week and requires three wins in its final three matches to reach the postseason.
