The Indianapolis Colts are in the middle of a major roster shakeup, and running back Jonathan Taylor is at the center of the uncertainty. The team has already sent two of its most recognizable players to other franchises this week, leaving fans and analysts wondering if Taylor will be next to go. Taylor, who has spent the first six and a half years of his career in Indianapolis, says he has not asked to be moved.
The Colts traded left tackle Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers. These moves represent two of the largest in-season transactions of the year. The departures have shifted the focus to Taylor, the team's leading rusher and a two-time league leader in rushing touchdowns. He also paced the NFL in rushing yards during the 2021 season, which earned him a first-team All-Pro selection.
Taylor spoke on Thursday about his desire to remain with the organization that drafted him in the second round in 2020. He admitted that the losses of Nelson and Buckner have created a difficult atmosphere. "I haven't heard anything," Taylor said. "I can't control that. Obviously, like you guys know, I'm always proud to wear the horseshoe, proud to be here." He noted that while he hopes his time in Indianapolis lasts, circumstances outside his control could force a change.
The uncertainty is affecting Taylor personally as well. His wife, Ayanna, posted on social media that her "mind is spiraling" amid the trade rumors. Taylor himself acknowledged the emotional weight of the situation, particularly regarding the players who left. He described Nelson and Buckner as the "gold standard" and expressed a wish that he could have done more to help them win while they were on the roster.
The Colts face a critical divisional matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. They enter Week 8 as underdogs, holding a 2-5 record. The team is in danger of falling further behind in the league standings if they lose again. General Manager Chris Ballard was fired mid-season, adding to the instability surrounding the franchise. As the November 10 trade deadline approaches, the front office is expected to field numerous calls regarding Taylor's availability. The Minnesota Vikings are cited as a potential fit for the running back due to their offensive needs, though other teams may also be interested.
Taylor is on pace to challenge his career high of 18 touchdowns this season, as he has already recorded eight in seven games. His production makes him one of the most impactful players available on the trade market. The Colts have not officially listed him as available, but the selling of Nelson and Buckner suggests the team is open to major moves. The outcome of the Jaguars game and any subsequent trades will determine Taylor's immediate future in Indianapolis.
