Families searching for a new home can now view nearby childcare options directly on property listings. Redfin, a real estate brokerage, launched a tool on its mobile and desktop sites that displays early care programs within a 10-mile radius of any for-sale home. The feature aims to help buyers account for the cost of care before they commit to a mortgage.

Daryl Fairweather, Redfin’s chief economist, noted that housing and childcare are often a family’s two largest expenses. He said the timing of a house search often coincides with the arrival of a child. Knowing available care options upfront helps buyers calculate their true affordability. This approach treats childcare as a fixed cost in the housing budget rather than a variable to be solved later.

The data comes from Winnie, a national online marketplace for childcare. Winnie maintains profiles for more than 250,000 licensed early care and education programs across the United States. The integration went live in Redfin’s iOS and Android apps in late September. Isabelle Novak, a Redfin spokesperson, confirmed the feature is now available on all for-sale listings. It sits next to the existing K-12 school rating tool provided by GreatSchools.

When users view a property, they can select a “Preschool & daycare” tab. This action displays up to five nearby providers. The list includes the ages each program serves and the distance from the home. Clicking a provider name opens a pop-up with details such as hours of operation, language, and parent reviews. Users can also click through to the provider’s full profile on the Winnie website.

Sara Mauskopf, CEO and co-founder of Winnie, explained that the platform pulls data from public state licensing databases. Providers can claim their pages to add details like available slots and tuition rates. About 25% of the 250,000 provider pages are currently claimed. Active providers on the platform frequently update the number and type of open spaces, as availability can change daily.

Mauskopf emphasized that the partnership is vital for families in both urban and rural areas. She noted that some affordable neighborhoods are “childcare deserts” with few or no licensed programs nearby. The tool allows buyers to see if care is available within walking distance or requires a drive. This information can prevent a move to a low-cost area that lacks the necessary support for working parents.

A key challenge remains the visibility of tuition costs. Mauskopf stated that many programs still require families to tour the facility before sharing prices. She described this practice as unusual for a market. However, she observed a recent shift as more providers begin to post tuition information publicly. This change is partly driven by families asking artificial intelligence tools for rate estimates.

Mauskopf believes the willingness to share prices online will grow. She hopes the Redfin integration will soon reflect this trend, giving families a complete picture of their costs before signing a lease or deed. The tool currently shows program details but does not yet standardize price data for every listing. Buyers in areas with no providers within 10 miles will see a message noting that no programs were found.
