Former NYPD Sergeant Tiffany Howell was sentenced on Tuesday to serve four to 12 years in prison. The concurrent sentences apply to her guilty pleas for Aggravated Vehicular Homicide and Manslaughter in the Second Degree. Howell, 48, of Warwick, also waived her right to appeal and had her driver license revoked.

The sentencing followed an announcement by New York Attorney General Letitia James. Howell entered her plea on August 19 before Judge Anne B. Bianchi in Westchester County Court. She had been off duty at the time of the incident.

The crash occurred at 11:37 p.m. on January 22. Howell was driving south in the northbound lanes of the Taconic State Parkway in Westchester County. Her vehicle hit a car driven by Manuel Boitel head-on while traveling at more than 50 miles per hour. Boitel was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead shortly after midnight.

Police records indicate Howell had a blood alcohol content of at least 0.18 during the collision. The incident triggered an assessment by the Office of the State Inspector. That office reviews all reports where a police or peace officer may have caused a death, regardless of whether the officer was on duty.

Howell remains in custody as she begins her prison term. The case concluded with the finalization of her sentence and the revocation of her driving privileges.
