Six critics have reviewed the new Hunger Games film, and their initial verdicts call it a flawless execution of the source material. The movie, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, serves as the second prequel in the franchise. It follows the 2023 release of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Early assessments compare the film to the Star Wars spinoff Rogue One for its tone and narrative weight.

The story centers on a young Haymitch played by Joseph Zada. He takes over the role previously held by Woody Harrelson. The plot follows Zada's character as he competes in the 50th Hunger Games. This event occurs 24 years before the events of the original film. The movie is based on Suzanne Collins' 2025 novel of the same name.

Francis Lawrence directs the film. He has helmed every installment in the series except for the first movie, which was directed by Gary Ross. Lawrence aims to bring fresh thematic layers to the familiar structure. Critics note that the production and costume designs remain visually dazzling elements of the film.

Reviews from major outlets and independent publications have been released in the last 24 hours. Griffin Schiller describes the movie as a sobering and powerful story. He calls it a perfect adaptation for fans of the series. Gavin Spoors of Filmhounds Magazine praises the third act as stellar. He notes that the film pulls the rug out from under the audience.

Matt Neglia highlights the casting as some of the best of the year. He notes that the actors breathe new life into familiar characters. Glenn Close is described as a scene-stealer. Jesse Plemons embodies the spirit of Philip Seymour Hoffman in his role. Neglia states that Lawrence continues to find more layers in the franchise's structure.

Perri Nemiroff from Collider focuses heavily on Zada's performance. She says his ability to capture Haymitch's warmth and charm is superb. She notes that much of the movie rests on his shoulders. Nina Starner from Static Media agrees that the casting could not be better. She calls the film a worthy addition that bridges the gap between the original stories and the prequel.

The film features a star-studded cast beyond Zada. Ralph Fiennes returns as President Snow. Kieran Culkin plays Caesar Flickerman. Maya Hawke portrays Wiress, and Kelvin Harrison Jr. plays Beetee. New characters are played by Mckenna Grace, Glenn Close, and Whitney Peak. The return of Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Harrelson has generated significant buzz.

Lawrence spoke about reprising her role as Katniss on the Call Her Daddy podcast. She described the experience as unbelievable and emotional. She noted that the same crew, including the assistant director, was involved. She said she and Hutcherson walked around with their arms around each other. The film is set to open in theaters on November 20 from Lionsgate.
