Jordanian security forces took three armed men into custody on Monday following a Friday attack at a Greek Orthodox church in the village of Hamoud. The gunfire during a funeral service killed nine people and injured forty others. Witnesses described the exchange as lasting several minutes.
Public Security Directorate officials located the suspects while they hid in an abandoned house in the Karak governorate. The men resisted capture and fired on officers. Security forces returned the fire, wounding all three suspects before securing them. No police personnel were injured in the encounter.
Officers seized multiple firearms and ammunition from the detained men. The directorate stated that the suspects met their just fate. Authorities have classified the incident as an act by extremist terrorists. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The directorate did not release the names of the suspects or specify any links to Islamist militant groups. King Abdullah ordered a forceful response to the rare violence against the country's Christian minority. He has directed security forces to act with an iron fist.
Interior Minister Mazen al-Faraya said officials are reviewing the conditions that drive young people toward extremism. He emphasized that anyone found to have participated in the attack would face accountability. Jordan remains one of the more stable nations in the Middle East despite the incident.
Officials have disrupted several Islamist militant plots in previous years. The attack occurred roughly 120 kilometers southwest of Amman. The three suspects remain in custody as the investigation continues.
