A recurring pattern of individuals entering New York City sewers has drawn fresh attention after three people were spotted climbing into the system in Woodside. The incident, reported Wednesday night, left detectives searching for the trio as of Thursday.
The 108th Precinct received a 911 call at approximately 10:22 p.m. on October 28 regarding a trespass near 60th Street and 43rd Avenue. A witness told officers that he saw the three individuals remove a street hole cover and descend into the underground network. Police have not located the suspects, who remain at large.
The NYPD’s Emergency Service Unit arrived at the scene but chose not to enter the sewer system. The Department of Environmental Protection, which oversees the infrastructure, was notified, and a crew from its Bureau of Water and Sewer Operations responded to assess the site. Law enforcement established a crime scene and began canvassing the neighborhood for surveillance footage that might identify the group.
It remains unclear whether the suspects caused damage to the infrastructure or encountered hazards below ground. This event follows a similar incident on October 11 in Manhattan’s Hamilton Heights, where three men were seen diving into a manhole. Officials have stated they do not believe these activities pose a security risk to the public, though they have not confirmed the specific motivation behind the entries.
The NYPD is seeking information from the public to aid in the investigation. Tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers by calling 800-577-TIPS or 888-57-PISTA for Spanish. Individuals can also report information online at crimestoppers.nypdonline.org or via X at @NYPDTips. All communications are kept confidential.
