Ukraine has mapped out a specific diplomatic response to the potential appointment of Viktor Orbán as United Nations secretary-general.

Andrii Sybiha, the Ukrainian foreign minister, addressed the move on social media after reports indicated that Washington supports the former Hungarian prime minister’s candidacy. Sybiha predicted that Orbán would apply the veto and blackmail techniques he honed while blocking European Union decisions to his new role.

The minister referenced a specific incident from an EU summit in late 2023. At that meeting, Orbán exited the room, allowing other leaders to approve the start of accession talks with Ukraine without facing a formal veto from Budapest. Sybiha described this maneuver as a useful lesson for global diplomacy.

"We can share with the rest of the world our great experience of taking him out for coffee at the right moment," Sybiha wrote. The comment framed the coffee break not as a courtesy, but as a strategic tool to manage the former leader's influence.

The push for Orbán’s elevation follows a Wall Street Journal report that the US administration is backing the bid to secure support from China and Russia. Earlier this year, investigative journalists noted that figures within the MAGA faction of the Republican Party explored this scenario. They suggested a UN post could shield Orbán from legal proceedings in Hungary. Szabolcs Panyi, a Hungarian investigative journalist, added that Orbán is preparing to move to the United States if he faces prosecution at home.

The next step in the process depends on the outcome of the UN General Assembly vote, which will determine the next secretary-general.
