Flavio Bolsonaro, the Brazilian senator and son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, declared himself the rightful president of Brazil on Wednesday. He made the statement during his first public appearance since traveling to the United States following his defeat in Sunday's presidential election. In his remarks, he addressed both the domestic population and the global community, asserting his legitimacy despite the official results.
The senator alleged that the election process was manipulated, describing the situation as a case of electoral fraud. He stated that he watched the results unfold on Sunday night with horror and claimed to have predicted the consequences of his loss. Bolsonaro characterized the subsequent actions taken against him as a politically motivated witch hunt designed to hold him captive. He explained that he brought his family to the United States due to the politicization of the Brazilian justice system, rejecting the notion that he had fled the country.
Bolsonaro thanked President Donald Trump and the American people for their welcome. He said he left Brazil to preserve the state of exception so that he could serve as the leader his citizens deserve. He urged foreign governments and institutions not to normalize the current political situation in Brazil. The senator affirmed his intention to lead the opposition from his new base in the United States, though he did not specify the mechanics of how he would execute that role from abroad.
His departure follows a contentious period where he faced various legal and political challenges. The senator maintained that his move was a strategic decision rather than an escape. He continues to frame his absence as a temporary necessity to ensure his eventual return as the legitimate head of state.
